“A time is coming when people will no longer listen to sound and wholesome teaching. They will follow their own desires and will look for teachers who will tell them whatever their itching ears want to hear. They will reject the truth and chase after myths” – 2 Timothy 4:3-4 (New Living Translation).

Today, I see this prophetic word from Paul coming true in America. Increasingly, I meet people have no knowledge of the Bible or sound Biblical teaching. Many of them attend church – some even regularly. They constantly measure things by their experience or feelings. They are looking for confirmation of God’s leading, while simultaneously ignoring the Bible sitting right in front of them. They wander from church to church looking for a prophetic word, while dust collects on their Bibles. They profess belief in God, but ignore God’s word, the Bible.

They own a Bible, but never read it. They say it is God’s word for their life, but never study it, or ponder its teachings, or sift through its pages, or show much interest in it at all, or care what it says about any subject.

Instead, they listen to Oprah or Dr. Phil or read spiritual mumbo jumbo found in Nostradamus or the latest best selling book or tv documentary on spiritual topics. Or worse, they listen to some self-appointed spiritual authority in the family or at work who babbles on and on about spiritual things as if he or she really knows what he or she is talking about, when they are really more lost than a witch doctor in the heart of a lost jungle. They listen to everything and everyone except God’s Word.

Isn’t it time we stopped chasing myths and opened our Bibles to hear what GOD has to say?
